The dog turned out to be the type of dog he had been looking for. One that would ride in a boat without rocking it. Small enough to take up little space and with enough retrieving and hunting ability to work on land and in the water. The other breeds that were used to formulate the modern boykin are the: Chesapeake bay retriever, springer spaniel, cocker spaniel, and the american water spaniel. The boykin spaniels are used for hunting and retrieving on land and in water. The coat is medium in length, with fine texture. The color is a solid rich liver or chocolate. The boykin spaniel can have a small white spot on its chest. The average boykin spaniel weighs about 35 lbs. and is 16 inches tall at the shoulder. The tail is docked.
